Explaining her artwork, Kobie says:

Having moved countries and experiencing how disruptive it can be for families settling into a new environment, my husband and I quickly realised the importance of being part of a caring, nurturing school environment where our children could find a sense belonging, as well as pathways to grow into their own unique selves. All our children are now graduated from school, and as parents we are so grateful for the foundation and springboard that a flourishing school life provided them. In this work, I wanted to express that sense of belonging, support, and encouragement that our children, and also our family, found in our children’s schools: a home away from home.

The main focus of this piece is the young man, walking through the archway into the school grounds. Bunya pines line the pathway that the boy is walking along. These beautiful trees carry ancient wisdom, grow nutritious seeds in their abundant cones symbolising shelter, nourishment and wisdom. Leaves of the tree are arranged in a flowerpot sitting on a round table, and on the leaves three satin flycatchers are perched. These birds are keeping a protective eye on the young man as he embarks on his journey. I like the idea of a round table as it suggests camaraderie, and a sense of equality and mutual respect. The patterns on the floor are circular and imitate the forms and shapes of balls and leaves, alluding to broader school life activities such as sport, music, and art.

I am so thankful that that this work is a finalist in the Grammar 150 Art Prize.
